Lookalikes

Having roped together a rather depleted team of only 9 players for this annual fixture the weather look set against us and the mood in the camp was a mixture of apprehension and crapulation (hungover). With the confirmation that play would start on time and the sight of what the 6 th form girls had to offer, the mood soon lightened.

The Maladroits were put into bat and the captain made the brave decision to start with an new opening partnership in the form of Sean (an East Sheen player) and one of our latest recruits all the way from New Zealand, Cameron Anderson. The opening pair got us off to a great start with Cam smashing two huge sixes into the headmasters garden and costing the Captain two new balls. After the first wicket, the run rate started to drop a little with some good 3 rd XI seam bowling. A knock to the head by a ball that got ‘a little big’ on JC seemed to do the trick and we were back on course. Three good innings from the top order (Sean – 44 / Cam – 41 / JC – 79) and some good cameo roles saw the Maladroits retire on 233 for 5 after 36 overs. With 20 overs from 6pm the pressure was on at tea to stuff as much in as quickly as possible whilst watching the end of the FA Cup (not sure who won but it doesn’t really matter…) and get out on the wicket to maximise the number of overs to bowl the opposition out.

Again, the captain made a brave decision to open the bowling with another debutant in the form of Marc Sydenham (or Junior). Having not played for 5 years, Junior made an aggressive start however was unlucky not to get a wicket. Richard Newman (Tricky) opened the bowling from the other end and should have been rewarded with the opening wicket of his first ball if it wasn’t for some comedy keeping from C Brewer (new spikes required). Tricky had the best spell of bowling I have seen him bowl for the Maladroits and was unlucky not to have got any wickets. Lets hope his form continues – the wickets will come! Despite some more comedy fielding from the likes of M Brenner, the Maladroits bowling was tight and general performance was good. The pressure built and wickets soon came despite some questionable decisions from the umpires (I have since been informed that anger management for the antipodeans is available as part of the clubs insurance policy – Cam is a Kiwi and not an Ozzy!). Once into the tail, the game was all but over and was professionally finished off by some Dusty style bowling from Mr Bogdan , who was ringered in at the last minute.
